Thomas Davis was unfortunate and got 25 lashes for harbouring two tired ‘travellers’ He might need to pick his friends more carefully next time.
David Hodgesley described as a ‘broth of a boy’ was silly enough to laugh at the expectation that he do some work. The thought of being locked up changed his tune and he promised he would extonish them in the future. I think they would have definately been astonished if he actually did any work and sent him off for 7 days to improve his conduct.
Mary Muldoon must have been quite a sight, resembling a beer barrel on stilts. It sound like a person of such proportions might have benefitted from the extra physical activity that her mistress requested.
Saying she would ‘not submit to such drudgery’ and that ‘she likes a nice genteel place where there was nothing to wound her feelings’ makes me wonder what put Mary in that position of subservience in the first place. Was she transported for laziness?! Imagine what she endured on the ship during the passage over. I am sure there were any amount of things occurring on board to wound her feelings and she clearly doesn’t have a problem complaining about it. Actually, imagine the poor women stuck below decks with her. I think maybe on arrival their punishment could have been reduced to time served after travelling in a confined space with one such as her.
When her six week sentence was passed her overly emotional reaction would have been very entertaining to see, and I pity the court staff that had to carry out this delicate petal!
