Today we drove out to Silverton which is a small town about 30 kms from Broken Hill.
The town was originally a large mining centre but now only consists of a pub, a few cafes, galleries and picturesque ruins. The only claim to fame that Silverton has these days is that it is on the edge of the start of nothingness, and, therefore a good place to shoot movies that need an end of the world look.
Lots of pretty average movies have been filmed here, but I expect that the best known are The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Mission Impossible II.
No matter how many other movies will be made here the one people most immediately associate with the town would have to be Mad Max II. The townsfolk are milking this association for all it’s worth too. We came here about 2 years ago and there were only a few cars in town and we had the old prison/museum to ourselves. Today there were cars everywhere (including a group of classic car owners parked at the pub), a new Mad Max museum, and the few places serving food were packed.
So much for the interesting ghost town 😦 If we ever come this way again I expect there will be a Max’s Burgers and a hotel.
If you are Australian and have testosterone, or associate with a person who has, you likely have seen Mad Max I and II (number III was crap, no shame if you avoided it…). If you are a man of a certain age I think it is a legal requirement of citizenship to have a copy on dvd too, I might be wrong about this though 😉
If you have not been exposed to this apocalyptic classic I will finish with a clip of the start of the movie which pretty much sums up the entire thing. Conveniently, it ends with Max scooping up the precious fuel at the Mundi Mundi lookout.
Apparently Mundi means flat. When you stand on the low hills here (or in the middle of the road as I did) all you can see to the distant horizon is mundi, as shown below.
Only mundi as far as the eye can see…..
Of course, this movie was made back in 1981, in the days when Mel Gibson was a young eager bloke looking to be a star. Unfortunately, now he has proved to be a racist, sexist, crazy person. So disappointing….
