I love living in Victoria, over the course of a week you just never know what kind of meteorological shenanigans you might be subjected to. It is wet today and are listening to flash flooding warnings. We were cooked on the weekend, it was 39°c. I should have done my washing then instead of going out, it has no hope of drying today!
The rain is stretching all the way from NSW through Canberra and into northern Victoria. Near Shepparton there are evacuations going on, with houses being sandbagged all over the place. Unfortunately for the residents of Tallygaroopna, I have seen an ABC News reporter splashing through the water in the bar of the Tally Hotel giving a flood report.
Southern NSW has been experiencing a large amount of rain for quite a few days. I have heard reported (among other things) that the city of Broken Hill was experiencing flooding. Earlier in the week a couple and their baby had to be rescued from a swollen creek on the Silverton Road.
In 2008 we stayed in Broken Hill for a few days on our travels, and from those memories it is hard to imagine such an arid place being flooded. We also visited the tiny town of Silverton, 25km north-west of Broken Hill, and just loved it. The claim to fame of this tiny desert town is that the Mundi Mundi Plains on its outskirts supplied the post-apocalyptic wasteland we saw in the Australian movie classic, Mad Max 2.
Yesterday I saw the pictures of an extremely wet Silverton on the news. It was such a contrast to my memories that I thought I would share a few of my favourite photos of our hot and dry day there with you.
