  1. Given that Petkoff was hanged a week later, I guess his defense counsel didn’t need the full “fortnight” for his appeal.

    You’ve got to love the old Soviet-style touch of adding a 46-year sentence, heavy fine and revocation of citizenship to the death sentence, given that it was pretty obvious what was coming.

    • I did laugh at the extras on his death sentence. Perhaps that is so he didn’t get too excited about an appeal. Even if he miraculously got a bit of leniency, he would still be in prison, broke and with no rights. No wonder it was only a week later he was hanged, I bet he just told them to get on with it!
      Criminals receiving insultingly light sentences is quite an issue in Australia these days, I’m not sure how popular a bit of Soviet-style ‘lock ’em up and throw away the key’ would be though.

      • Yes, leniency has its drawbacks, but it’s still far better than the Gulag or summary executions after a quick show trial, I’ll give you that. Reminds me of the old saying, “Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.”
