The kids went to the Melbourne zoo for a school excursion last week. The enclosure for the hippos these days is far different! Of course the secure fencing we have now isn’t so much to save us from the animals as to save the animals from us. Can you imagine if this was the hippo enclosure today? It wouldn’t be five minutes before some idiot climbed over to have a pat or his picture taken or threw a bottle in the open mouth to see what would happen.
I wonder whether or not people in 1927 were just as likely to do those stupid things. Did people take more personal responsibility then? Any thoughts?
