In the city at 11 o’clock yesterday morning all work ceased and noise was stilled. Thousands of persons stood bareheaded in the streets, and vehicles stopped. In the intense silence the city clocks slowly chimed eleven. For two minutes there was silence, and then as suddenly as activity had ceased, it recommenced.
