Richard Manual was definitely not a good husband. After 16 years of constant unhappiness you really would think that his wife would have already left. If he didn’t cut her on the head (cobra, a new buried word) with a knife as he claimed, I wonder what the ___ was that they left out of the report? I’m also wondering what the charges he had bought against her were to send her to the factory so many times?
The way Ann Jones was described is very interesting. The use of the word elegant in the description makes me think it is not meant in an insulting way. I think it is just an awkward (to our PC eyes) way of acknowledging of the fact that she is asian in a time when very few ladies of that origin would have been out and about, let alone in court for assault.
You have to feel for the poor old man keeping his knocked-out tooth in his pocket, since they couldn’t make out his name when it was spoken in court it sounds like he really needed it to have stayed where it was!
