I came across the word dernier when I was looking for articles in the old newspapers. It means last resort. In this newspaper report of 1803 in the last article the suicide attempt was reported as a dernier resource. I have found lots of suicides reported in the papers and in earlier times people seemed to have different ways of offing themselves than we hear about today. Of course back then there weren’t tall buildings to throw yourself off and a distinct absence of trains or cars to dive under. I’m not sure of the most popular method suicides use these days but I can expect that cutting your own throat is not as popular as it used to be and that hanging is as popular as ever.
I love the poetic way the problems of the man taking the dernier resource in the last article are described. A superabundance of sensibility and an insupportable vexation occasioned by the elopement of an amiable partner whose paramour, to add to his mortification, wore a wooden leg.
Hmmm… A drama queen having a tantrum because his girlfriend embarrassed him by running off with a bloke with a wooden leg.
I love the f’s used for s’s in old articles it makes me feel like I am reading with a lisp.
