We have had hot, hot, days recently, no doubt you have already heard me whining about them. That means the cook (that would be me) has been delivering cold dinners and snags cooked on the barbie. The kids have been pretty happy but the Man is a meat and three veg kind of bloke.
Today the temperature has dropped to a far more comfortable level so I took the chance and made a stew. Unhappy kids, happy Man. Oh well, can’t please everyone…

Lucky he loves a stew, in winter I cook them all the time. If he didn’t I might end up like Sadie in this short story from 1942.
What an interesting idea for a short story competition, to use less than 100 words and only words starting with “s” or “t”. I am not sure I could write anything that made sense under those restrictions!
The kids had watched Jamie’s Fifteen Minute Meals on tv last night, and one of the things he made was frozen berry yoghurt, so a deal was struck. Stew for dinner, no complaints to be made, and I would supply the ingredients to make dessert.
It was a great recipe for the kids to make on their own; 500g frozen berries, 500g yoghurt, and a few spoons of honey. Into the food processor, smoosh it around, then freeze.
Number 2 did it all on his own and only needed help to lift the heavy mixer when it came time to splodge it into the bowl.
My ancient food processor was none too pleased about the frozen berries but managed to get through it admirably. I usually do everything by hand, the food processor I have is the one my mum had when we were kids!
Well, the stew was eaten and the yoghurt was a success. Nobody complained, least of all the Man……

Glad to hear the temperature’s gone done and the only fire was in the barbie
The “s” abd “t” challenge was terrific!
I am too, although the mercury will be rising again tomorrow.
I would like to have read some of the other entries into the “s” and “t” story competition.
Wow, that short story challenge sounds interesting. Very cool concept!
When I first read it I thought there was no way a story could be written under such restrictions, but once I thought about it S and T start a lot of words!
That is why I love them when I play scrabble
I also would have liked to read more of the S & T stories… the stew story was very clever.
Oh my, you are a Very Good Missus, to be cooking stew in summer. The G.O. bbq-ed for 3 weeks straight with only a little food prep assistance, and quite a few requests for seafood from me. That, leftovers and a couple of pub meals sustained us and the holiday budget nicely
I love a stew myself! Apart from the initial browning of the meat I do the rest in the oven so I don’t have to stand over a hot stove all day. I have requested a bbq area to be built near the back door though, so I can make dinner without having to come inside!
Pub meals on holiday sound pretty good to me
